National Association of Medicaid Directors to Affiliate with the NGA
In August 2010, the Executive Committee of the National Association of State Medicaid Directors (NASMD) voted to break away from the American Public Human Services Association (APHSA), ending their 31-year affiliation. A new organization – the National Association of Medicaid Directors (NAMD) – was created as a result of this vote.
In November 2010, the National Governors Association (NGA) announced that NAMD had started the process to become an independent affiliate of NGA. The press release quotes NGA Executive Director Raymond C. Scheppach, noting that “Addressing health reform implementation will be a critical issue for governors over the next year, and Medicaid will continue to become a larger part of the average state budget. Additionally, Medicaid will be increasingly housed in state health care agencies. The relationship between the governor and the state Medicaid director is vital to ensuring we continue to deliver state services in the most cost-efficient and effective way possible.”
